Project Description:

The Red House is a newly extended kitchen, opened into one generous space and designed as a sculptural room built around Patagonia quartzite, fluted walnut and cladded detailing.

The opportunity was a single room, newly formed from a kitchen knock-through, and the chance to give it real presence. We designed it as a sculptural composition that maximises storage while keeping the impact high. Taupe grey cabinetry is warmed by fluted walnut wall cupboards, with Patagonia quartzite adding movement and depth. A customised island with cladded down stands anchors the room, with a bespoke dining table cantilevering from its end. The walnut returns in the table and dining chairs, drawing cooking and dining into one considered whole. We furnished the space throughout, from soft furnishings to rugs, so the finished room feels complete rather than simply built.

Working with Kirstie at Ordinary Interiors was altogether a very satisfactory and productive experience. Firstly, they listened to our ideas and came back with a design which was responsive while containing elements that we had not and would not have thought of. This consultative approach continued through the implementation phase. Not only were we kept up to date with progress, but we were consulted when adjustments had to be made to the original plan. Last but not least, they were very conscious of the agreed budget and worked diligently to adhere to it. We are extremely pleased with what Ordinary Interiors did for us and have no hesitation in recommending them to prospective clients.
